Some of you know that, outside of SOTB, I work in real estate. Don’t try and get me fired because I didn’t like your song, please. Now that that disclaimer is out of the way, I work more with tenants and try to get them deals and leases that don’t screw them over. Yes, money is the end goal. We all love nice things and to be able to provide for our families. However, I’m not going to work with anyone who’s on some foolishness to royally screw the tenant over.
Space Baby’s “Cancel Rent” focuses more on the residential side of the market. He’s definitely pro-tenant, even with his somewhat off-kilter punchlines. On a reggaeton-inspired beat, the Miami-residing, Dutch-born artist shares my sentiments about tenants having rights to protect them and clauses to keep from getting screwed. I mean, no one wants a landlord who doesn’t provide what’s needed. That rings true in commercial real estate and–as a former landlord myself–definitely rings true in residential real estate.
The point is this: landlords should be helpful and pro-tenant themselves. Why? Simply put, tenants help keep landlords off the streets themselves.
