Maryland-based artist threeeyedmouse hit my line and compared his latest, “ABUSE YOUR ILLUSIONS” to a mix between JPEGMAFIA and Schoolboy Q with a big of Flatbush Zombies and Danny Brown thrown in for good measure. That’s a helluva comparison, but let’s get into the track and see if it stands.
From a lyrical standpoint, the brother’s sound AF. mouse goes in and he’s spitting his ass off on “ILLUSIONS.” He’s technically impressive while still making me bob my head to what he’s saying. That’s already a plus in my book. Then, the rest of the song comes into play. From a sonic standpoint, I can definitely hear/see the Peggy comparisons. This is because the track goes from abrasive boombap to moshpit-friendly no-fi punk-rap vibes in a split second, all while still letting mouse get his bars off.
The visuals are a bit of a mindscrew, though. However, this isn’t a bad thing. Instead, it’s mainly because the video blends so much symbolism into a general “the world is effed up, but there are still some components of it that are worth saving” mishmash of excellence. mouse, in his submission, mentioned that the song and its visuals are a condemnation of the “grind” culture we’ve come to expect from people–as well as celebrity as a whole–and it shows. It’s a sight to behold and a song to take to heart. Check out the visuals for “ABUSE YOUR ILLUSIONS” above and remember to support dope music in all its forms. The song should be on all DSPs within the next few days, but is already making its rounds on Bandcamp and YouTube.
