Houston’s Jayvii Malo hit my SubmitHub with this track about a week ago. From the first second I heard this, I knew it was something special. While the subject matter isn’t fresh (the song is called “Love is Pain,” after all), Malo’s vocals and the way he approaches the subject are both refreshing. With just a touch of Auto-Tune and the emotional weight of an old-school artist, he sings about wanting his lover back–even though he’s out here potentially cheating with (but definitely seeking attention from) all types of hoes. Yes, he’s done his lover dirty but he regrets it. Additionally, the song revolves around trust issues the woman displays, how it’s been affecting their relationship and how its mostly his fault.
In an R&B game where many dudes are shiesty–and some women are too–it’s definitely a sight for sore eyes to see a crooner feeling remorse for his F-boy tendencies. On top of that, even if he doesn’t get his lover back, he has the desire to be better. Add this to a video that’s simple in its approach, but masterful in its lighting, and you’ve got a banger.
