GLAM is quickly becoming one of my favorite indie west coast artists. I think it has something to do with the fact she’s unlike your average artist. She’s able to blend several genres without losing her overall message. Her latest, “Sweet Fiyah,” gives me serious Missy Elliott vibes. It’s a sweet song about someone GLAM has her eyes on, but one that also has an underlying sexiness to it. Said sexiness has a bit of Janet mixed in because of her pseudo-whisper singing at points.
GLAM’s ability to more than hold a note on “Fiyah” is the selling point to me because there’s minimal Auto-Tune used and her voice sounds natural. It isn’t overly processed and the crispness of it is refreshing. The production feels like a mid-2000s R&B track mixed with the dancehall-friendly energies we’ve gotten in R&B over the last few years. With that in mind, it still sounds distinct and unlike a lot of what listeners may be accustomed to.
If you’re looking for an uptempo jam to tell your partner you’re not going anywhere, “Sweet Fiyah” is definitely up your alley. If you just want to relive the days when multifaceted women could rap with the best one track and sing on the next, this one’s also for you. Check it out above and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
