German singer Nalan’s “Bed of Tears” reminds me of a mix between Billie Eilish and Alessia Cara. She can sing and sing well, meanwhile mixing darker themes with poppy melodies. The song itself is about feeling powerless and wondering the meaning of one’s life. However, it’s sang in a way that you’ll sing along with the dark chorus.
The video is pretty ambitious, as well. In the video, we find the songstress bouncing between throwback video vibes (think Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” with its closeups on MJ), VCR era videos and modern sensibilities. The video’s abstractness matches the song’s darkness and contradictory sound as each fantastical image also feels as if it’s attempting to swallow Nalan whole. She seems stuck in a world where existence is constantly questioned and reality is often skewed, giving a twist on the adage “more than what meets the eye.” Check out the track and its visuals below and support dope music in all its forms.
