Jahan Nostra first got my attention with his song “Ungrateful.” This one, which features REKS and Tahmell (Rakim’s son), keeps some of that same energy–specifically the lyrically-impressive nature of it. Over a boombap-esque beat from Australian-born, Chicago-based producer Buda Bap Beats, the trio take us back to the 90s with pro-Blackness and pro-lyrical rap without being completely stuck there.
No, this one has a timeless appeal to it. This can be seen from the production to the love each artist exudes when it comes to hip-hop (or, truly, any craft that takes some love and dedication). The storytelling on this one is beautiful because it flows out in bunches over the jazzy beat. It’s hard to single out a single line that sticks with me because the entire track sticks to your ribs like lyrical soul food.
This is slated to be featured on Jahan’s Violet Skies EP series. The series is said to have a lot of rapper’s rappers, from Masta Ace to Blu. If you’re feeling “Dedication,” check out the projects when they drop and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
