I found Sxtwlve with a song that wasn’t the one that he meant to submit. In fact, it was his 2019 track “Black Mirror” that brought me to his latest offering, the somewhat abstract “Six to the 12.”
The song sounds a bit like a mainstream rap track, but delves deep into the mental effects the hustler mentality can have on someone. Additionally, the track deals with the darkness that comes with trying to grind your ass off. The song is a bit abstract–as is its video–as there isn’t a set narrative (at first glance/listen). Only when you sit down with this one and let it wash over you with its lyricism do you find what Sxtwlve is really getting at. He’s critiquing mainstream rap sensibilities, the rules of those sensibilities and how they impact the world around us. I like this one. Check it out below and remember to support dope music in all its forms.
