I don’t really know how to describe this one, at least I didn’t on first listen. However, after running “Heart Eyes Cause You Special” back a few times, I’ve come to a conclusion. It’s as if Earl Sweatshirt did his best Lil Wayne circa “I’m Single” impression over sparse drums and boombap-esque production. If that sounds like a mindscrew, it is–but in the best way possible. It’s equally a love song as it is a “don’t take us too seriously and just enjoy the idea of an ‘us'” sort of vibe.
X (pronounced as “ten,” like the Roman numeral) is a Baltimore producer/artist, and that Baltimore diversity comes out in spades on this short song. This is his first solo single since “Next Day Demo” from late 2021, one that I went back to peep after “Heart Eyes.” I enjoyed this song, for sure. Because of that, I’m passing “Heart Eyes Cause You Special” along to you, the SOTB Faithful, so you can hopefully rock with it as well.
