Sly5thAve (the composer of the track) and JSWISS (the lyricist) aim to add their two cents to the rap game, and I’m here for it. First of all, I love the production and instrumentation here. It sounds like a mix of Dilla vibes, boombap and jazz. In other words, if you’re a music nerd (like me), you’ll love this one. Even if you’re not a music nerd, you’ll appreciate that there’s some thump behind the smooth melody as well.
The bars are also very solid, as they bring to mind open mics and cyphers. This is hip-hop at some of its most pure elements, as the duo are saying that someone’s got to make rap smarter. Thankfully, they don’t mean smarter as in “more lyrical miracle cereal killer” types and nothing but those types. More so, they’re saying we need a lot more diversity in the game. Again, I’m here for that sort of energy–especially when it sounds like this.
